10 Hip Hop music industry stats for 2022

Hip Hop is undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with. The sound, the fashion, the dance, the art, the lingo, and the culture have spread all over the world. While still the youngest major genre, the now not-so-new NY-born movement still leads global pop culture in influence and in creating the latest trends. Here are 10 industry stats you might not have known that show we outchea.

Drake Tops a Top 10 Global Recording Artist List

Drake

According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), Drake was fourth on the list of Top 10 global recording artists in 2021. The only rapper in the top 10, Drake came in ahead of heavy hitters like Ed Sheeran, The Weeknd, Billie Eilish, and Justin Bieber who ranked 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th, respectively. Drizzy was only beat out by the Korean juggernaut band BTS in first place, Taylor Swift in second, and Adele in third. Drake’s popularity around the world is well-known and he’s no longer the new kid on the block so this might not be much of a surprise but it’s still a pretty big deal.

Most Searched Rapper Homes on Google

Drake's mansion

Drake may not have been number one on IFPI’s list of top 10 global recording artists in 2021 but he did rank number one in another category. As of January 2022, according to home insurance company Confused.com and as reported by several Hip Hop news and blog sites, Champagne Papi’s home was number one in search queries looking for rappers’ homes. Confused.com released a news press release stating they “compiled a list of celebrities via desk research using most famous lists from sites such as Forbes, IMDb, Ranker, E Online, Business Insider and then looked up the number of Google searches for their house in the last 12 months using Google Adwords Keyword Planner.”

Drake’s 50,000 square foot estate topped the list of most googled rapper homes with 1,002,500 searches from December 2020 to November 2021, and he also had the second most googled celebrity home period, second only to Tesla’s Elon Musk with a search volume of 1,321,500 searches.

Most Grammy Award-winning individuals of all time as of 2022

Hip Hop has long since had a contentious relationship with the Grammy awards. We’ve all heard the news stories. Going back as far as 1989, when rap was still relatively new to industry acceptance, rap artists DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, Salt-N-Pepa, Public Enemy, Ice-T, and others boycotted the Grammy show and stage because its new category: Best Rap Performance wouldn’t be televised. Things have changed a bit since Jeff and Prince won that first category and now two rappers top the list of most Grammy award-winning individuals of all time.

Jay-Z and Ye

Billionaires Jay-Z and Kanye West are tied with 24 Grammy wins each as of the latest count from the April 2022 awards for the most Grammy award wins. According to the Grammy Awards, Jigga “has wins in each of the four Rap Field categories. Hova’s blueprint for GRAMMY success includes collaborations with other artists such as Beyoncé (“Drunk In Love”), Rihanna (“Umbrella”), and Justin Timberlake (“Holy Grail”).”

In step with his big brother, Ye has the same amount of wins. The difference is that “he has often competed against himself. For example, he had two nominations (and a win) each for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for 2012, Best Rap Album for 2011, and Best Rap Song and Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group for 2007.” Jay and Ye share the honor with the likes of fellow icons like U2, Quincy Jones, composer John Williams, and unsurprisingly Beyoncé with 28 wins and 79 nominations; more than any other woman artist.

Most Grammy-winning albums of all time as of 2021

Jay and Ye held it down for the most Grammy wins in Hip Hop per individual but what about per album? When you think about Grammy-winning albums, a Michael Jackson or U2 release probably comes to mind. They are definitely on the list of most wins of all time per album. U2 sits at number one for the album How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb with 9 wins and the King of Pop is there unsurprisingly with 7 wins for Thriller. At the same time, Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar are rubbing elbows with the members on Statista’s list.

Jay-Z's The Blueprint 3

What might be surprising is that Jay’s inclusion isn’t for The Black Album or The Blueprint but for The Blueprint 3. This album had a lot of major commercial hits for Jay on it including “Run This Town” featuring Kanye West and Rihanna, “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)”, and Jay’s first ever number one hit, “Empire State of Mind” with Alicia Keys.

Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly

Kendrick Lamar’s critically acclaimed To Pimp a Butterfly made waves in the news when it was released and the praise grew the deeper critics dug into the project. K. Dot received high marks across the board and no less than 7 Grammy awards for this album alone.

Most successful music tours worldwide in 2021 by show revenue

J. Cole

Touring has been tough during the pandemic but the show did go on. Even still, it seems like not many of those shows were hip hop in comparison to the rest on the list. According to the list compiled by the statistics website Statista, the only rapper to appear on the list of most successful music world tours by revenue per show in 2021 was J. Cole. Cole’s tour reportedly brought in $1.46 million in gross revenue per stop. The “My.Life” emcee tied with pop star Lady Gaga and just behind crooner Bruno Mars with $1.5 million per show.

Of course, this statistic doesn’t tell the full story of the tour, how many dates, the cost of tickets and venue size play a part in the total revenue but in comparison, the Rolling Stones topped the list with $9.62 million per stage. It will be interesting to see who shows up on the list when the 2022 figures are calculated.

Most successful music tours in North America in 2021, based on tickets sold

Pitbull

When it came to the ticket sales of North American tours, the only rap entertainer on Statista’s list was Pitbull. The Miami artist sold took his spot on the list with massive 424,545 tickets sold. Pitbull ranked three spots above Guns N’ Roses at 351,339 sold and just below Maroon 5 with 467,607 tickets sold. At least in Hip Hop, Mr. Worldwide could conceivably crown himself Mr. North America if he pulls a repeat in 2022.

Hip Hop/R&B was the most streamed music genre in the United States in 2021

Hip Hop/R&B runs streaming by a pretty wide margin. 29.9% of all streams are from the genre which is similar to the previous year. Rock comes in with about 17%. It would be interesting to see the resulting stats if Hip Hop and R&B were counted as the separate genres that they are.

Hip Hop is still the top genre in the U.S.

Hip Hop/R&B is out in front of all other genres in 2022 so far. According to Billboard “R&B/hip-hop led the way as both the top genre and the one with the most growth by volume, pacing the market once again.” Even at the top, Hip Hop/R&B is showing growth of 6.3% which isn’t as high as others but “it still outgrew every other genre in raw numbers year over year, meaning that even though its share of the overall market dropped from 28.4% midway through last year to 27.64% at the halfway point this year, it’s actually widened its lead at the top in terms of overall equivalent album units. It’s the only genre to have passed 100 million equivalent album units so far this year, and at 131.4 million, it’s not close.”

Again, it would interesting to see the numbers with Hip Hop and R&B separate.

Hip Hop/Rap is the top genre among 18-29 year olds

Just like Wu-Tang is for the children, young adults are for Hip Hop/Rap. In a CBS News opinion poll, 32% of respondents 18-29 years old voted Hip Hop/Rap as their favorite type of music. The genre holds a commanding lead in front of second place Pop music with 19%. Rock, Christian/Gospel, and Country round out the top five in this demographic with 17%, 11%, and 8% respectively.

Most downloaded by country

While streaming is king in the consumption of music, people are still downloading music. According to Luminate Data’s (formerly Soundscan) MRC Data Report 2021, Hip Hop was among the top three most downloaded genres in Brazil, Australia, China, India, Canada, Nigeria, South Korea, the UK, and the US.
