Benefit – The Labyrinth EP

Benefit – The Labyrinth EP

Benefit has been putting in work for a long time, and if you’ve followed the EMS movement, you already know the type of foundation he comes from. That circle, which includes artists M-Dot, Kore, Revalation, Mayhem, Desco, and Undu Kat, has always leaned into sharp lyricism and a no-frills approach to Hip Hop. That camp built its name on sharp writing and a straight-ahead approach to Hip Hop, and Benefit carries that into The Labyrinth. This EP keeps things tight at four tracks. From the opening “Cruel Eyes” to the closing “Bog of Internal Stench,” there’s a clear direction. The title fits. Each track feels like a different turn, a different space, but all part of the same path.

Production from Thvnos holds the whole thing together. The sound is dark and stripped down, with a steady boom bap feel that never gets stale. “Goblin King” leans into that gritty tone, while “Labyrinth Center” feels more reflective, almost like a midpoint where everything slows down for a second. The beats don’t try to overpower anything. They sit in the background and let Benefit do his thing, but they still carry enough weight to give each track its own identity. There’s a consistent mood across the EP, which makes it easy to play straight through without skipping around.

What stands out most is how direct Benefit is on the mic. There’s no filler here. He gets straight to it, whether he’s talking about growth, pressure, or trying to stay grounded while everything around him shifts. Tracks like “Cruel Eyes” set the tone early with that focused delivery, and by the time you get to “Bog of Internal Stench,” it feels like he’s worked through something. It lines up with what he’s been building lately, especially with Co-Defendants alongside Profit. This EP doesn’t try to be bigger than it needs to be. It stays focused, sticks to its sound, and lets the writing carry it.
