Lu Chin Chen – Height

With Height, Massachusetts emcee Lu Chin Chen continues a run of independent releases that stretches back more than a decade while building on the momentum of 2024’s Dangerous Solution. The eight-track EP is a producer-driven project that pairs Lu with a collection of respected boom bap craftsmen including Frost Gamble, Sultan Mir, Conflikt of Hellzwind, Zam One, P-Ro, Tali Rodriguez, Skinny Bonez Tha Godfatha, and Fuzzy Ed. Veteran Canadian turntablist Dystrakted is the project’s lone guest contributor, providing cuts on three tracks and helping reinforce the album’s traditional hip hop foundation.

The EP’s primary focus is classic boom bap. Rather than chasing current trends, Height embraces sample-driven production, hard drums, DJ cuts, and lyric-centered songwriting. Listening to the project, it’s easy to hear why the promotional material repeatedly references Golden Era hip hop. The beats feel rooted in the traditions established during the 1990s while maintaining enough polish to avoid sounding like simple throwbacks. For listeners who grew up on independent underground rap from the late 1990s and early 2000s, much of the project will feel immediately familiar.

Lu Chin Chen’s biggest asset remains his consistency on the microphone. Across the EP, he handles all of the rhymes himself and demonstrates a clear understanding of how to ride a boom bap beat. The rhyming is confident and technically solid throughout, which helps hold together a project built around multiple producers. One track highlighted during the album’s rollout, “Cheque It Out,” was specifically noted for blending humor with sharp lyricism in the tradition of groups like The Beatnuts and Tha Alkaholiks, offering some insight into Lu’s approach as a writer.

If there is one area that immediately stands out, it’s the mix. The overall sonic presentation kind of gets in the way. Some listeners may find portions of the project a little hot or overly compressed compared to older boom bap records that left more room for dynamics. Even so, the quality of the production lineup, the presence of Dystrakted’s cuts, and Lu’s steady performance make Height a worthwhile listen for fans of independent hip hop. More than anything, the EP feels like the work of an artist who knows exactly what kind of music he wants to make and has little interest in compromising that vision. As a follow-up to Dangerous Solution, it reinforces Lu Chin Chen’s commitment to traditional lyric-driven hip hop while continuing to expand a catalog that now includes projects such as Weight, Dangerous Solution, and Height.
