“Smile” clocks in on Jay Z’s 4:44 at track three and features his mother Gloria Carter delivering a poem in the outro about living your truth. Her poem speaks on her experience hiding her sexuality so as not to hurt the people around her. The video depicts a woman who seems to represent Ms. Carter and mimics her struggle. The real Gloria Carter shows up at the end of the video reading her poem to a support group and finishing it with a smile as she as finally able to live free.
