Coast LoCastro & Johnny Slash ft. Apathy & Lil Dee – Mean While In Gotham

NY emcee Coast LoCastro and Houston producer Johnny Slash connect with force on their new single “Mean While In Gotham,” a gritty collaboration that also features Apathy and Coney Island’s rising voice Lil Dee. The track arrives as the latest preview from their upcoming project Slash Coast 2, released through Broken Complex Records, and it immediately makes clear that this duo is not interested in soft edges or crossover appeal. This is street-level hip hop with teeth. Dark, cinematic, and unapologetically raw, the song leans into atmosphere as much as lyricism.

The emcees are fully locked in, delivering aggressive bars that bounce between braggadocio and outright hostility. The lyrics are confrontational, violent, and intentionally over the top, full of comic-book villain energy and exaggerated threats. It is not subtle, and it is not meant to be. They rap like someone defending territory, dismissing copycats, and reminding listeners why Gotham still needs the Batman.

Mean While In Gotham” knows exactly what it is. This is not a radio record. It is not chasing trends or trying to soften its edges. It exists firmly in the lane of underground hip hop that values raw expression, dark imagery, and lyrical intimidation. As a preview of Slash Coast 2, the single suggests that Coast LoCastro and Johnny Slash are doubling down on what made the original Slash Coast project resonate.

In a week filled with embarrassingly weak submissions, this is a shining light.
