2012 has been a busy year for Portland, Oregon emcee Illmaculate. In April, the rapper released his latest album, Skrill Talk, and this weekend Illmac will kick off a European tour alongisde his hometown crew,Sandpeople. Today, Illmaculate is releasing the latest video from Skrill Talk, for “Lost Our Soul,”featuring Ness Lee.
“Lost Our Soul” is Illmaculate’s opportunity to give praise and respect to the city he calls home. “Portland was the inspiration behind the song,” describes Illmaculate. “I wanted to make an anthem representing where I’m from, but in an original way.” To do that, Illmac reached out to Southern rapper, Ness Lee, who co-produced the track with Chase Moore and also laid down the song’s soulful hook. Illmaculate handles the verses, his boisterous vocals giving a voice to his hometown atop the horn-and percussion-driven beat.
Directed by Kyle Gray, with cinematography by Nelson Caravannis and 3D and effects work by Reggie FourMyle, the visual follows Illmaculate’s lead, complimenting the Illmac’s performance shots with a variety of Portland landmarks as his backdrop. “The visual touches on the changes we see everyday in the city,” explains Illmaculate, “while still celebrating accomplishments and growth of the city’s hip-hop scene.”
