Has-Lo’s debut album In Case I Don’t Make It, out now via Mello Music Group, began garnering attention immediately upon release. XXL Mag, The LA Weekly, eMusic Editor in Chief J. Edward Keyes, and Passion of the Weiss all selected the album as a standout. Though not your typical party and grab ass record, In Case I Don’t Make It turned heads because of it’s gritty depiction of a man who’s life was at a breaking point.

“They say a man only takes so much and then snaps / And they all seem shocked / When his ass pulls up and pulls out / On the room, when he’s pullin his tool back to cut / When there’s no where to move and he shoots / (rrrrat!) you’re done.”

The beat, produced by Has-Lo, starts with a sample from the popular 80’s film Breakfast Club, that belies the intensity about to begin. Hard drums and eerie vibraphone ring out. When asked Has-Lo states: “The song is about betrayal and how a person processes what’s happening to them with that betrayal. It’s loosely based on some things that happened to me, so the mood is very aggressive. I was angry! The beat is angry too. I think most of us can relate to a line or two if not the entire song.” Indeed.

Lyrics:

They say a man only takes so much and then snaps
And they all seem shocked
When his ass pulls up and pulls out
On the room, when he’s pullin his tool back to cut
When there’s no where to move and he shoots
(rrrrat!) you’re done
Water couldn’t help these flames
While the breath in him yells praise his health seems grave
If karma were so romantic
This wouldn’t be a fantasy, I’d have a hammer with me
I would roll to your street and fan you with heat
Bet a flame explodes in the beak when the animal speaks
It could all be so simple
I wouldn’t have checked for you if I didn’t think you had somethin with you
The one thing I ever wanted was honesty
But honestly, how’d I ever think I would get it from you?
A lot of niggas I had are livin in drag, it’s sad
Though he’s shifty I’d give him a pass
As if it wouldn’t come back to bite me
Like he didn’t wear a mask and act just like me
Hindsight’s 20/20 for me, it’s funny, you fucked me
Even though the thrill in it’s dumb cheap
I represented for you people
Hell if I didn’t but Has isn’t who you cling to
How could I respect how you livin?
You’d sell me up a river, your image isn’t the real you
What’s your limit?
