Donwill featuring Nicky Guiland – Breathe

“Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale.” It’s not that hard of a concept. But for Donwill, these acts take on a much bigger role in his new single, “Breathe,” off of Donwill’s concept album, Don Cusack in High Fidelity. The Cincinnatian turned Brooklynite released his debut solo album a little over a year ago, and continues to embrace the infamously heartbroken Rob Gordon character from the cult classic film High Fidelity. He has also been touring with his group, Tanya Morgan, who were recently highlighted on the cover of Billboard and will be performing a number of times this week at SXSW.

Donwill’s third video from Don Cusack showcases one of the lighter songs on the album. Winter has been tough on Brooklyn this year, but Donwill and director Corey Davis of Greedmont Park used the heavily snow-coated Bed-Stuy streets as a calming backdrop. Paired with the angelic voice of Nicky Guiland, half of the Queens duo HEAVy, Donwill’s verses have a meditative tone, dropping mantras like, “Time is precious/ Life is priceless/ Just be patient/ Keep on trying.” Although the entire album is themed as a personal catharsis, just like the film, Donwill notes that this track is one of his personal favorites. “It’s one of those songs that means more to me than it ever could to you,” explains Don. “It may be strange to say [that] about your own music, but this song has got me through some hard times and I hope does the same for you.”
