Brooklyn Bodega is proud to add a new event to the week-long programming of the 2011 Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. The Bodega Education Initiative (BEI) will focus on encouraging dialogue on the various disciplines of Hip-Hop; from business to law to writing to production and everything else in between.

Brooklyn Bodega and The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival always strive to unite people through Hip-Hop culture and the BEI emphasizes that mission furthermore by opening up the dialogue to a wide range of topics concerning the Hip-Hop community.

“Helping the younger generation to become masters of their own brands is my passion. I believe that educational opportunities for our Hip-Hop youth are part of an underserved market and I would like part of my personal legacy as well as that of Brooklyn Bodega to take the lead at fulfilling this gap.”
-Wes Jackson, Executive Director,Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival

The theme for this year’s BEI will give participants the chance to explore the various spaces within Hip-Hop. BEI will be covering topics based around the other elements of Hip-Hop culture, essentially those “Beyond the Mic.” While rapping has always been at the forefront of Hip-Hop, there’s a whole world beyond the mic and the emcee. These topics will make for interesting discussions.

Started in 2010, the BEI focuses on giving people the opportunity to learn from mentors and more importantly, each other. This day-long event will feature roundtable conversations on a variety of topics such as: Hip-Hop journalism, entrepreneurship and the role of gender and sexuality in Hip-Hop, just to name a few.

About Bodega Education Initiative
A series of talks and discussions designed to create a space of dialogue between the diverse members of the Hip-Hop community. Attendees of the BEI will receive a basic knowledge on the history and content of Hip-Hop as seen through the pioneers and most intimate members of the culture. BEI will ultimately serve as a meeting point for all the different voices and perspectives within the Hip-Hop community: fans, artists, scholars, and practitioners in order to honor the history as well as add momentum to the culture.

The inaugural BEI occurred on July 6th, 2010 as part of the 6th Annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival where Brooklyn Bodega and The J Dilla Foundation celebrated the legacy of James Yewitt Yancey (aka JDilla) through tabled discussion. Panelists included Hip-Hop legend Q-Tip, Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey, DJ Spinna, Waajeed of the Platinum Pied Pipers and more.
